What happens when a new sibling comes to live with us? When single and working in the Amazon as an indigenist, Carlos, the father of Peri, Caue and Jaci, had a child with an Indigenous woman. Now that Carlos has died, Carlinhos comes to live in the city with his new family. This is a story about prejudice, enriched by images of Indigenous Brazilians.
Carlos, an indigenist known for his work in the Amazon, dies prematurely. A year later, his wife, Carmen, and their children, Peri, Caue , and Jaci, discover the secret that Carlos tried to reveal before his death but could not: when he was still single, he had a son, Carlinhos, with an Amazon Indigenous woman who died shortly after giving birth. Now orphaned, the boy goes to live with his new family.
Carmen accepts him, Peri resists, Caue tries to resolve the impasse, while little Jaci soon becomes attached to her new brother (she loves the Indigenous stories Carlinhos tells her). Gradually, the boy wins over his neighbors. At school, however, he experiences hostility from a group of students led by the bully Renato. During a school trip, Jaci and Renato’s brother get lost in the woods and no one can find them. It’s the young Indigenous boy who saves them and earns everyone’s admiration.
Cultural differences and prejudices, but above all affection and tolerance, are at the heart of this sensitive and amusing story, written by one of the great authors of contemporary Brazilian literature.
